Ghost in the forest: additional notes on the search of the mysterious São Tomé Green Mamba (Elapidae: Dendroaspis). pp. 108-114.
Abstract. The potential occurrence of a Green Mamba population on São Tomé Island, Gulf of Guinea has intrigued herpetologists since the late 19th century. Historical publications based on currently lost museum specimens support the presence of Green Mambas on the island, suggesting the possibility of a distinct endemic species. In one of these publications, the São Tomé population was even described as a new taxon ─ Dendroëchis reticulata ─ and an illustration of the specimen was later provided. Further records present evidence of the existence of diagnostic morphological differences (such as the number of subcaudal and supralabial scales) between the São Tomé population and the continental species, although the absence of specimens leaves the status of this population unresolved. Here we unravel the history of the São Tomé Mamba, discussing different scenarios on its taxonomic identity and potential extinction. The unique morphological traits and insular context suggest that Dendroëchis reticulata may indeed by an endemic species in São Tomé Island, although the lack of modern specimens or any observations leaves the existence of a Green Mamba in São Tomé shrouded in mystery.
